Questions
There are some religions in which you have to pray in the middle of the day. How is this handled in our school? We don’t have Prayer rooms. If you would like to pray or have to pray in school, you can arrange it with the school management. They’ll most likely have an empty office for you. Do we have any religious studies? No, we don’t have any religious studies. The thing coming closest to religious studies is Social studies, here we also discuss the subject religion. How are the other religions handled in the Jac. P. Thijsse? We are a public high school, so we’re already open for other religions. The only reason we don’t have a lot of other religious people is because the school is located in a very white neighbourhood. If there would be any (other) religious people we would welcome them with open arms and happy faces. Because the respect for other cultures and religions is of paramount importance. There are a lot of positive effects of a multicultural representation of students at school. For example, you learn a lot more about different cultures, countries and parts of the world just by talking to the students. You also have respect for different people a lot faster than when you’re on a school where almost everyone has the same culture, because you learn that everyone is different. Having multicultural representations of students at school also helps against racism. In my area a long time ago everyone was Catholic, but now it is a little more diverse. Still most people are either Catholic, protestants or Christian. After some research on the internet i found out that in my area we have 3 mosques, 9 Catholic churches and 5 protestant churches. By these results you can easily tell most people go to Catholic churches. At our school we do not have a lot of diffrent ethnic groups. Because of that, I don’t agree that my school is a multicultural school. In our area we don’t have a lot of diffrent cultures represented, compared to when you go to a big city like Amsterdam. In big city’s more cultural groups are represented. But we do have a couple of shops that represent other cultures, like Chinese restaurants. A lot of Dutch people love the Chinese food. We also have one Napalese restaurant close to our school, and a Turkish sewer. My conclusion is that our area is overall could use a bit more cultural influence than we are having right now. One general subquestion: Does the government have any policy as regards the promotion of multi-cultural education? By Dutch law, (section 8.3 Law on primary education and section 17 Law on secondary education) schools are obligated to give attention to the active citizenship and social integration. Students must be able to grow up in a multiform society and should be able to meet with different backgrounds and cultures of contemporaries. The government will leave it to the schools themselves about how they implement this. |
