Sinterklaas: Sinterklaas is a festivity from which kids get presents from Sinterklaas from somewhere in november (it depends which year it is) till the 5th of December. This festivity is about a man, Sint Nicolaas and his pieten. They give presents to all the kids , they go through the chimney and put a present in your shoe. The kids can place their shoe next to the chimney and sing a song, then he will put a present or pepernoten in it when you are asleep. And most families are celebrating the birthday of sinterklaas on 5 December, by buying lots of presents, and of course pretend Sinterklaas did that, because he doesn’t really exist. Me and my family still celebrate it although I don’t believe in Sinterklaas anymore, but it’s just really nice to buy presents for each other and be together. It’s actually just like christmas but then Santa Clause is Sinterklaas, elves are pieten and the reindeer sleigh is a horse. At Sinterklaas the dinner is not something traditional but we do have candy and other delicious stuff that are important at Sinterklaas, Like pepernoten: a nut shaped cookie that tastes really nice, its actually spiced biscuit but then small. You also have marzipan and letter shaped chocolate. Christmas: Here in the Netherlands, we celebrate Christmas not as big as Sinterklaas, but we do celebrate it. Some families are giving each other presents, like mine, but not every family because not everyone celebrates it in that way. That’s because in the past the Netherlands never celebrated Christmas like the Americans do, that means no tree, no presents, no decorations, it was just a festivity for the people that believed in god. But now most families celebrate it just like they do in America: a Christmas tree, a nice dinner with the family, decorations all over the house and presents. At dinner most families are going to gourmet, and at the day you can visit all kinds of activities like a nativity scene and its decorated all over the place! Birthdays: In the Netherlands, Birthdays are being celebrated quiet big. Most of the time, if its somebody’s birthday, that person gives a party. At a birthday party, you usually invite your friends and family to come over. You almost always eat some cake on your birthday, and in the evening there is music and everyone gets a drink. If you are the birthday boy/girl, you are getting a present from everyone. Most people give money because it can be really difficult to think of a present that they will really like but if you know that person well you most of the time give a real present instead of money. At the birthday of a kid, they always invite their friends and they are going to do something fun like bowling or to the cinema. On my birthdays, I went to the circus, bowling, climbing and I gave a sleep over once. This is a really nice holyday because it’s all about you. sintmaarten Sint Maarten is on the evening of December 11th. On that evening children go outside with their self-made lantern to sing a song at someone’s door, and when they did that they will get a mandarin or candy. Sint Maarten is a celebration for children. Most children start with this at the age of 3 or 4 and you may choose yourself how long you want to go on with it but most children stop when they are approximately 13 years old. As a grownup you still need to do something because you need to listen to the songs the children sing and give then some candy. The only decoration there is this evening are the children’s lanterns. On primary school they make them there. They are all different so it’s very nice to look at. You can also buy them in store when you don’t have one. |
